Rafael Federico Rivas-Chacon, M.D., is board-certified in internal medicine and rheumatology and has been Director of the Rheumatology Division at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital since 1989.

A native of El Salvador, Dr. Rivas-Chacon earned his medical degree at the University of El Salvador School of Medicine. After completing a rotating internship and one year of internal medicine in El Salvador, he completed an internal medical internship and residency at Mount Carmel Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio. Dr. Rivas-Chacon came to Miami in 1986 as a rheumatology fellow at the University of Miami, Jackson Memorial Hospital, and V. A. Medical Center. He then completed a pediatric rheumatology fellowship at Northwestern University Ann & Robert H Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago, Illinois.

He is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics Rheumatology Section and the American College of Rheumatology and a member of other professional societies. He has published peer review articles and has been involved in a number of research activities including industry sponsored clinical trials.

Other Activities

Dr. Rivas-Chacon is the founder, organizer and medical director of Camp Funrise, a one week sleep-away camp for children with Rheumatic conditions; Camp Funrise was the first of its kind in South Florida was active for 26 years.

He is also the founder of Juvenile Arthritis Program, an Interdisciplinary Group for the Management of patients with Rheumatic Diseases which was also active for 26 years.
