Dr. Hing-Sheung Eugene Fung, MD, FRCPC, FACR

Dr. H-S Eugene Fung was recruited to Waco in Central Texas from the Windsor Rheumatic Disease Unit and Clinic of Southern Ontario in Canada, which he directed after the completion of his Chief Residency Fellowship in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology at the University of Toronto—undoubtedly the most sought-after Canadian Rheumatology training program then and even more so now. Dr. Fung established the Arthritis & Osteoporosis Clinic in Waco and brought in the first Bone Mineral Density equipment to the area, as well as the expertise and experience he gained in Canada. He is the longest serving Rheumatologist in Central Texas, having been in Waco for over 26 years without interruption. He has run a teaching Rheumatology Clinic for over 20 years with the McClennan Education and Research Foundation, and the 36 post Family Practice Residents usually come to study under him during their final year. He was selected for the Aynesworth Outstanding Faculty Award by the residents. He was the first clinician—in the world—to successfully adopt and report the usage of PTH 1-34 in treating Refractory Bisphosphonate Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw in 2007. He published “Gout Treat to Target” in 2017 in the Hong Kong Medical Diary, and he presented a paper on the proper dosing of Hydroxychloroquine in Lupus and Arthritis to the 2018 Mediterranean Congress of Rheumatology.

The Arthritis and Osteoporosis Clinic currently has 2 Rheumatologists, one Nurse Practitioner, and one Physician Assistant providing current rheumatology and bone care. Since the Clinic services a population of about 250,000 in the Central Texas area (with some patients even traveling from 2 hours away), the decision was made 2 years ago to selectively provide health care for specific Rheumatology conditions. By doing this, our average appointment waiting time for a consultation is approximately one month. All inflammatory and autoimmune rheumatic disorders are treated. State of the art BMD, which has both Vertebral Fracture Analysis and Body Composition capacities, helps in the assessment and treatment of Bone conditions. Our Infusion Unit staff along with research coordinators provide both routine biologic agents as well as clinical research therapeutics. The Clinical Research Department routinely has about 6 cutting edge ongoing clinical trials to service patients with various Rheumatic conditions. We are also engaged in a few investigator-initiated clinical studies.
